Bob l'éponge

SpongeBob SquarePants

The creator of Bob L'Eponge, Stephen Hillenburg, really begins to create his character in 1984. By studying marine biology at the Orange County Ocean Institute, he becomes more and more interested in animation and decides to reconcile his two passions with writing a comic strip. Named The InterTidal Zone, it features different anthropomorphic marine animals, who have now become characters from the Bob the sponge series. For his part, Bob was a simple sea of sea in the second plan, not intended to be under the spotlight as it has been since 1999.

The year 1987 marked a turning point for Hillenburg who decided to start from his post to make his debut in animation. In 1992, he studied character design at the California Institute of the Arts and quickly found work in the television series by the name of Grimmy, on which he worked from 1991 to 1993. Shortly after, he produced his own film entitled Wormholes.

In 1995, Joe Murray, creator of Rocko's Modern Life, meeting Hillenburg during an animation festival and offered him the opportunity to animate the series. Hillenburg then joined the animated series of Nickelodeon as a screenwriter, producer and designer of the third season.

Rocko's Modern Life ended in 1991. Hillenburg took advantage of this end to start his work on Bob L'ponge, in the company of former Nickelodeon animators and members of the Rocko series. Originally, Bob the sponge is appointed in original spongeboy version, but this name is already taken, as the team discovers after only 7 minutes of dubbing in the first episode in 1998.

Nickelodeon believes that the series cannot be broadcast as it is. Hillenburg therefore decides to rename his main character, always with the word "sponge": it will be "bob the sponge" and he chooses "square" as a family name.

The series is broadcast in the United States on Nickelodeon after the broadcast of the twelfth Kids' Choice Awards ceremony. The first episodes are welcome, the big cleaning and chain asphyxiation. The "official" preview of the series was then broadcast on July 17, 1999.

By preparing the meal for anchovy Hungry, Bob the sponge demonstrates its potential and finds itself engaged! This is how the inhabitant of a pineapple located in124 rue des Conques in Bikini Bottom starts itscareer in catering.

In 2000, the popularity of the series increased. The series landed in France on TF1 and Teleteston in 2002 and Canal J and Nickelodeon France in 2003. Originally intended for a childish audience, Bob the sponge appeals to all age categories, especially for adults, which would constitute a third of the public in the series. There are now 13 seasons and more than 527 episodes, a sign of planetary success that still does not run out of steam.
