Garfield's gourmet adventures

June 19, 1978 marked the beginning of a feline era, revealing to the world the first steps of

Introduction

Garfield is the main character of the comic of the same name, by Jim Davis. It is a plump and lazy orange cat, known for its love of food (especially lasagna), its aversion to Mondays, its legendary laziness and its sarcastic humor.

Writing a story on a cat was inspired by a plush that Jim Davis had had when he was a child while the name Garfield was inspired by Jim Davis' grandfather, James A. Garfield Davis. It seemed unusual and sounded well for a cat.

The comic strip was published in 41 newspapers at the time, but its success has truly exploded until it is one of the most popular comics in the world.

Characters

The comic strip is initially based on four characters. Garfield, the central character, Jon Arbuckle, the master of Garfield, who finds his origins in an advertisement of the 1950s for a coffee brand, while Odie comes from a radio advertisement made by Davis for Oldsmobile-Cadillac. And the fourth is much less known, Lucien, initially occupying the role of the owner of Odie. Finally, this character was quickly deleted.

Many characters participate in the story of Garfield.
We find in particular Liz, the veterinarian and the romantic interest of Jon Arbuckle.
Nermal, a cute gray kitten and often considered the cutest cat in the world by other characters. It sometimes annoys Garfield.
Arlene, a pink cat and friend of Garfield. She was an occasional romantic interest for him.
Pooky, the favorite plush bear from Garfield. Although he does not speak, he plays a symbolic role in the universe as a companion of Garfield in his moments of loneliness.
Other characters are present in comics like Doc Boy, Harry, Irma, Squeak, Aunt Ivy, Cactus Jake, Floyd, Booker and Sheldon.

The story

When Jon arrived in his life, Garfield was the obvious choice, even overshadowing the competition of an Iguana and a Pet Rock. Thus, with its feline charm and its extravagant manners, Garfield reigns supreme over its kingdom of delicacies, naps, and teasing.

Indeed, Garfield embodies selfishness and laziness. Its imposing 32kg silhouette is matched only by its disproportionate ego. Convinced that cats are the most intelligent on the whole planet, Garfield devotes himself with delight to his favorite activities: eating, particularly lasagna, sleeping, and ruthlessly teasing his entourage, in particular the poor dog Odie. Mondays, a cursed day, often plunge him into unhappy adventures.

Garfield, far from being an indifferent lonely, shares his universe with a charming companion, Arlene. However, the leniency of Garfield does not always extend to others, especially in Nermal, the cutest "kitten in the world". In a memorable joke, Garfield even sent Nermal by post to Abu Dabi, to the United Arab Emirates, proving that he is the king!

Despite his sometimes ruthless jokes towards the others, Garfield reserves a special place in his heart for his silent companion, Pooky, the teddy bear. It is with a particular tenderness that Garfield shares moments of comfort and intimacy with his faithful plush companion.

Garfield comes out of his box

"Garfield and Friends" is the series Animated cult. Broadcast from 1988 to 1994, each episode offers a humor feast: Garfield teasing towards Jon, Escapades with Odie, and adorable animals.

"Garfield and Friends" conquered the hearts of the public, winning daytime Emmy Awards and leaving his brand in the world of animation.

"Garfield and Cie" is an animated series created in France, inspired by the famous character of Garfield. The series was broadcast for the first time in 2008 and continues to present the comic adventures of Garfield, as well as his lifelong companions: Jon Arbuckle and Odie.

Garfield is always focused on his favorite activities such as eating, sleeping and teasing Jon and Odie. The series also includes new characters and original stories. A group of rabbits is sometimes present.

"Garfield and Company" was designed for the French -speaking public, but it is also available in other regions.

THE movies "Garfield: The Movie" (2004) and "Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties" (2006) transport the famous orange cat to the world of cinema.

In the first opus, Garfield, hosted in 3D and doubled by Bill Murray, embarks on an adventure to save Odie. The continuation, "Garfield 2," propels Garfield in England, where he mischievously exchanges his place with an aristocratic cat.

These films combine real shots and animation, offering an entertaining cinematographic experience for comics fans.

Garfield's universe also extends to video games.

Among these games are "Garfield: Caught in the Act" (1995), a platform game offering players to guide Garfield through thematic levels. "Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties" (2006) offers a video game experience on Nintendo DS and PlayStation 2, corresponding to the release of the film of the same name. Many other games are available like "Garfield's Fun Fest" (2008), "Garfield Kart" (2013), each exploring different aspects of the Garfield universe through challenges, races, and interactive adventures.

Fun Fact

A joke in Garfield was censored due to its content deemed inappropriate.

Jim Davis, the creator of Garfield, shares the love of his character for the lasagna. He even shared in interviews that he often ate lasagna during the creation of Garfield's first comics.

The author also admitted that drawing a comic book cat was not as easy as it seems. The simplicity of design of Garfield is the result of many tests and adjustments.

Before becoming worldwide thanks to Garfield, Jim Davis was the author of Gnorm Gnat, a designed band in which the main character is a cynical snow. The comic did not bring enough to Jim.
