Takashi Murakami returns with BAKA, his new exhibition, to Galerie Perrotin

Takashi Murakami is a magician of the pattern and the color. Although some of his subjects are deep black, the pop visuals prevail. Knowing how to read between patterns is Murakami's story. And it's once again the Galerie Perrotin that he chooses to exhibit BAKA, his new exhibition; with 30 pieces. Among them we can see Mr. DOB emblematic character from Murakami's universe reinterpreted in 6 new portraits. A way to discover or re-discover this character created in 1993 by the artist. But more than a character, Mr. DOB is the personification of Murakami's questions about the world as an artist and a man; the 1,5m sculpture of Mr. DOB in this exhibition is proof of this. We turn around to see each facet, a bit like a personality. No wonder Murakami also offers us two self-portraits with his own caricature. Decisiveness and humor are planned in this first showroom. And that's not all...

Mr DOB is not the only one to have his sculpture, Takashi Murakami reiterates the experience with Devil Ko2, a human-sized sculpture with manga and hypersexualized features. Galerie Perrotin stresses that it took the artist 10 years to make this sculpture from an original drawing by Nishi e Da, an illustrator of erotic mangas. You can't wait to see it. But beyond the performance, Takashi Murakami has been able to impose a universe that also expresses itself through a leitmotiv pattern: the flowers. With a wide smile and sparkling eyes, Murakami flowers are psychedelic. Yet it's a new interpretation of this that awaits you with an unpublished series entitled Panda Flower Ball.

We will also be surprised by Takashi Murakami's more traditional influences with two large paintings of 10 meters long and three tondo, made on a round support and traditionally in slight relief. For the first time in France, the artist presents the series Fish Paintings inspired by an original pattern painted on a vase dating from the Chinese Yuan Dynasty. With its blue tones and fish, this series promises to be hypnotic and very poetic.

BAKA by Takashi Murakami will be presented from Wednesday, October 16 to Saturday, December 21, 2019 in the ballroom of the Galerie Perrotin at 60 rue de Turenne in Paris
