HOUSTONFORNICATION - Travis Scott

Musically, Travis Scott is often praised for its ability to push the boundaries of modern hip-hop, incorporating psychedelic visual elements and complex sound production.

His most emblematic album is undoubtedly "Astroworld", released in 2018. One of the tracks on this album is "Houstonfornication," the 16th track, which refers to Californication Red Hot Chili Peppers. The title is a pun combining "Houston", Travis Scott’s hometown, and "fornication", evoking the excesses and temptations of celebrity life. The two songs explore common themes such as the pursuit of the American dream, the illusions of celebrity and the personal challenges that result from it.

Although I enjoy almost all the pieces of this artist, there is a passage at 1 min 13 s where his flow is simply incredible, which pushes me to put it in this blog.

Matrix - Josman

Josman, whose real name is José Nzengo, is a French rapper and songwriter known for his style that merges melodic rap, trap, and electronic influences.

Since the beginning of his career, Josman has proven his mastery with remarkable pieces such as "Ailleurs", "Loto", "Fucked Up", "Vanille", "L'Ocassion", "Intro", "Dans le Vide", "La Danse de la Joie"...

For me, his first album "Matrix", which is far less well-known than the rest of his discography, remains a classic, thanks in particular to his eponymous piece. This title explores the concept of simulated reality, inspired by the film The Matrix. The production of "Matrix" combines futuristic synthesizers with striking percussion, creating an immersive and dynamic atmosphere that perfectly reflects the avant-garde approachJosman’s innovative and forward-thinking.

...DE BATARD (feat. Wit.) - Laylow

Let’s stay in the digital world of Matrix with one of my favorite artists : Laylow and his first studio album, "TRINITY", released in 2020. This project is presented as an “emotional stimulation software” designed to revive lost emotions in a reality that seems increasingly remote.

The “...DE BATARD” piece is particularly striking, telling the story of a homeless man and being linked to track 14, “LONGUE VIE...”, forming the expression “long life of a bastard”. This title, in collaboration with Wit., consists of four verses, each offering the perspective of a different character. The first verse depicts the life of an unemployed man, living with his wife and teenage daughter. His life of debauchery brings financial and family difficulties. The second verse is seen through the eyes of this man’s wife, who is anxious for the future of her family and worried about the irresponsible behavior of her husband and their daughter. The third verse takes the teenage girl’s perspective, focusing on her drop-out from school and relationship with an older boy. Finally, the fourth verse, interpreted by Wit., presents the point of view of the judicial officer who seized the family’s property, thus putting a final point to their history.
The piece raises intriguing questions about the homeless man’s identity, suggesting that he might actually be the bailiff rather than the man in the first verse.

In terms of production, Mr. Anderson (alias Laylow) used a sample from the track "Saint Pablo" by Kanye West, adding an immersive sound dimension to this deeply introspective piece.

OUVRE LA PORTE! - La fève

La Fève, whose real name is Louis Ambroise, is a French rapper and producer who stands out in the new wave movement of French hip-hop. His music is known for its innovative side, skillfully mixing a very different range of flows, prods and refrains.

Although his album "ERRR" has with the single "Mauvais Payeur" marked the minds, it is a particular piece of his album "24", released in December 2023, which particularly caught my attention : "OUVRE LA PORTE!".

This track embodies everything I appreciate about La Fève : a striking instru trap, a clear flow and typical of the new wave, and an explosive energy that makes you want to tear it all up.

He is known for his fluid flow and mastery of the different cadences, skillfully combining elements of trap and melodic influences. His omnipresence in the music scene is remarkable, with an ability to shine on a multitude of pieces and collaborations, which testifies to the enormous work he does.

Personally, I particularly appreciate his approach to old school rap, which he handles with great brilliance. That’s why his song "Dangereux", taken from his last album "Chambre 140", deserves a place in this blog.
