Why did Be@rbricks become so famous?
Created in 2001 by Tatsuhiko Akashi, CEO and founder of Medicom Toy Inc., the Be@rbrick is now one of the most famous designer toys. Ranging from 7 cm to 70 cm, made from ABS plastic, wood, metal, or porcelain, the wide range of stylized bears has attracted a very large audience. But how did they go from a simple welcome gift to a collectible item?
Direct descendants of the Kubrick figures, Bearbricks have become essential pieces of contemporary design. Created by the founder of the Japanese company Medicom Toy, these figures combine the heritage of traditional toys with the modernity of "blank art toys" – toys that serve as a canvas for customization. The story of Bearbricks begins with a logistical challenge. For the 12th edition of the World Character Convention in Tokyo, organizers approached Akashi to give an exclusive figure to every visitor. Faced with high demand and tight deadlines, Akashi designed a figure that was both simple and easily recognizable, capable of being mass-produced without losing its artistic value. To design this new toy, the Medicom Toy founder drew inspiration from the Teddy Bear, since the launch coincided with the 100th anniversary of the plush bear, and from the Kubrick figure, whose body reflects the 'Lego-like' aesthetic of Kubrick figures with nine movable parts, providing a solid and familiar base. This intentionally minimalist design opened the door to endless collaboration possibilities. Today, the Bearbrick is no longer just a toy, but a medium of expression for the world's top artists, luxury brands, and designers with numerous crossovers. The rarity of Bearbricks varies depending on the collaboration, material, size, and series quantity, attracting both collectors and fans of pop culture, fashion, and street art.
Bearbricks are available in multiple sizes (50%: 3.5 cm, 70%: 5 cm, 100%: 7 cm, 150%: 10.5 cm, 200%: 14 cm, 400%: 28 cm, 1000%: 72 cm).
The largest ever produced: 8000% (5.6 meters), exhibited in 2021 in Singapore.
In summary, Bearbricks, created in 2001 by Medicom Toy CEO Tatsuhiko Akashi, have grown in popularity over time thanks to their minimalist "blank canvas" design, allowing many artists and brands to leave their mark. The numerous collaborations have captivated a broad audience seeking the rarest pieces.
What materials are Bearbricks made from?
Essentially, Bearbricks are made from ABS plastic, but due to collaborations with luxury brands and artisans, some Bearbricks have been made from wood (Karimoku), metal (Royal Selangor), porcelain (Fragment Design), carbon fiber (Amirex Japan), and more.
Does Medicom Toy only make Bearbricks?
Medicom Toy does not only offer Bearbricks, but also more realistic articulated figures such as Miracle Action Figure Ex (Mafex), Ultra Detail Figures (UDF), Vinyl Collectible Dolls (VCD), and Vinyl Artist Gacha (VAG).
How to recognize an authentic Bearbrick?
To verify a Bearbrick's authenticity, check several elements: that a certificate of authenticity is included in the box, verify the barcode, ensure the figure is securely placed in its packaging, that the joints click and are not loose, and that a holographic sticker and QR code are present to scan with the "Hidden Tag" app.
