Description
Thirty years after Yoshitomo Nara Having become famous with his paintings of sinister figures, the artist developed his practice to reflect his unique empathic eye. This book presents the full range of Nara's work. In addition to his most recognizable pieces, such as his omnipresent portraits of characters with a wide -wide eyes on a monochromatic background, readers will discover his first paintings, sketched on surfaces ranging from cardboard envelopes made during his stay in Germany, as well as an installation which recreates his drawing workshop.
His most recent works are also represented, in particular its bronze and ceramic figurines on a large scale and its portraits made following the 2011 earthquake which devastated Japan. By comparing and contrasting these pieces through the distinctive musical objective of Nara, The catalog also presents "lining notes" written by the artist on various albums from his personal collection, published for the first time in English. Viewers will see the evolution of a dynamic artist who has become more contemplative with age.
