The Beastie Boys are such a legendary American hip-hop group that the characters created for the music video of their song Sabotage by director Spike Jonze became fully-fledged characters! When Spike Jonze presented the Sabotage script to the Beastie Boys, he was already known for his skate videos and had previously directed a video for them, though not yet for Kanye West or Daft Punk.

Sabotage works like the opening credits of a ’70s TV series – a completely believable parody of Starsky & Hutch with wailing sirens! Here, Ad-Rock, MCA, and Mike D of the Beastie Boys are more engaged than ever in their roles as crooked, loser cops, with black mustaches, aviator sunglasses, and overly long ties. Their characters Nathan Wind, “The Rookie,” and “The Chief” were born, and even have their names in the credits!

The Sabotage music video, part of the band’s fourth album Ill Communication, propelled them to interplanetary stardom. The group developed an aggressive style – hip-hop saturated with highly aggressive rock instruments (electric guitar, drums). They are the equally unexpected and explosive fusion of the skater world and the American hip-hop scene, then dominated by the bass of Dr. Dre, Tupac, and Snoop Doggy Dogg.
