Portrait #14: Squink

This time, we are going to England, to meet Sinky, a creator. You can find all his creations in the smallest detail on his Instagram at the end of the article!

Tell us a little of your work, what are your tools and your inspirations?

My work has changed a lot in recent years because I have developed certain techniques. Obviously, my work depends on my feelings and my mood. Right now, I'm trying to create something that can be seen as peaceful, sad, tragic ... It really depends on the interpretation of spectators. For me, this is the difference between what we feel inside and what we give to see.

I work mainly with paintings and acrylic inks, on pieces of vinyl, I could not live without my heat pistol that accelerates drying times and saves a lot of time. For sculpture, I use a mixture of super sculpey and milliput (plasticine), with elements ranging from a set of different waxes to the tin sheet (for complex natural textures).

When I started, I was inspired by many anime, and artists such as Tado, who fully managed to bring these styles back to Europe. Having gained confidence with my brush, I developed a more pictorial style, and I think that now I am especially inspired by artists such as James Jean, Yoskay Yamamoto, And Yoshitomo Nara. I really like their ability to create something current, which still seems to be completely ignoring the world around us.

Tell Us a Little About Your Work, What Are Your Tools and your Inspirations?

My Work has changed a lot over the years as i've developed certain application methods and of course my work changes on my feelings and mood. Right now i Aim to Create Something That Can Be Seen As Peaceful, Sad, Tragic .. It Really Depends On the Viewers Interpretation. For me it is about the different Between What We Feel on the inside, and what we allow the world to see.

I work mainly with acrylic painting and inks, on vinyl pieces, i couldn't live without my heat glun that speeds up drying times and saves a lot of waiting surround. For Sculpting Work I use A Combination of Super Sculpey and Milliput, With Tools Ranging from Wax Sculpting Sets, to Tin Foil (For Complex Natural Textures)

When i first started out i was inspired a lot by anime, and artists such as Tado, Who Managed to Bring Those Styles Over to the West in Such A Unique Way. As I Gained Confidence With A Brush I Developed My Style Into Something More Painterly, I think now I am Mostly Inspired by Artists Such AsJames Jean, Yoskay Yamamoto, and Yoshitomo Nara. I REALY LOVE Their Ability to Create the Work that looks so of the moment, yet Still Seems to Completyry Idjurre the Way The World Around Us has affected of a lot of modern styles.

When did you start working on art toys ?

I started working as an auto-entrepreneur artist in 2011 with the launch of the Dunny Kidrobot 2011 series. On the other hand, I use art toys as a creation medium since 2006. Art toys are something that I became a big fan after having discovered them on the old Kidrobot site, before they produced their own toys.

I remember seeing the figurines of Eric SO And Michael Lau And to have been completely blown away by their originality (and their price). It was for me something impossible to obtain, partly because of the high cost, and also because Kidrobot did not explore abroad. The United Kingdom was a bit private at the start of the phenomenon.

Shortly after, I remember the opening of "playlounge" in the United Kingdom. They sold Qee, which were my first work medium. I wanted to have a toy Personalized and painted by me that I completely missed it.

The availability of the Dunny has improved significantly in the United Kingdom, so that I no longer needed to provide myself abroad. It has become a much more viable art support. I noticed that there was a real request for my creations and people ready to buy a personalized room. I was able to finance the purchase of toys to be climbed either (as soon as they were available). As there was an increased demand, I was able to develop my skills in sculpture, and I gave myself the chance to do a real job, which I still occupy now. I slowed down the pace this year to have more time to devote to my first passion: the design.

When Did You Start Working On Art toys ?

I Started Working As A Self Employed Artist in 2011 With the Launch of My design In the Kidrobot 2011 Dunny Series, However i'd been using toys as a platform for a few years before that, i believe SomeWhere Around 2006. Art toys Were something i'd become a big fan of after seeing their originally on the old kidrobot website, before they had Started Producing Their Own Vinyl Platform. I Remember Seeing The Eric SO and Michael Lau Figures and Being Totally Blown Away by the Originality (and the prices) they were seen by me then as something unobtainable, Partly due to the high cost, and Partly because Kidrobot Didn't Ship Overseas, Meaning the Uk was loany much cut out of The Whole 'Scene' At The Start.

Soon after that I Remember "Playlounge" Opening in the Uk, who Sold qee's, Which Were My Entry Platform. I Remember Wanting to Have My Own Piece Produced So Badly That I Painted One Myyself, then the Whole Thing Blew Up, Dunnys Were raised and Availabilty in the Uk Improved, Because they weh were? , it made using them as an art platform much more viable. As soon as i notice asked for my work on toys, People Newly Wanting to Purchase my Customed Pieces, this meant I Could Fund Further Purchases of Diy toys (AS Soon Asyy Became Available) as there was increased request, Wit a Growing Commission List, and I was able to develop my scullpting skills, it was decided that i should at least give it a try as a 'it has been Steady Ever sincere, Though I AM GOING TO Slowing Down A Little This Year to Ensure I have more time to concentrate on my original path as a designer.

What was your latest creation on an art toy ?

For the moment I have a lot of time for the event Toyconuk in April. I have a number of half -finished pieces, but the last toy That I have finished is a cute "Shawnimals Dumpling". I normally work in the cute style, but it was a pleasant change, and I know that many people prefer this to my current style so I occasionally accept orders like this. Hopefully my style will continue to evolve over the years to come, and that toys Also.

At the moment i am finding a lot of time take up producing work for Toyconuk in April so it's all moving very quickly, I have a number of pieces half finished at the moment, but the last piece I actually completed was a cute Shawnimals Dumpling. I don't work in the straight clean cute style so much now but it was a nice change, and I know a lot of people prefer this to my current dirty style so I occasionally accept commissions like that. Hopefully my style will continue to evolve over the coming years, along with art toys themselves.
