The 53 stations of Tokaido are a series of Japanese prints, created in 1832 following Utagawa's trip on the Tokaido road, the main axis of Japan at the time. His works are part of the current called "Edo", released just after the series of 36 views of Mount Fuji by Hokusai.
The collection was a huge success, with some prints printed in more than 30,000 copies. This enthusiasm allowed him to continue his work, in particular with the 69 stations of Kiso Kaido.
